NAIOP Mentoring Program Builds the Future

WHAT IS THE MENTORING PROGRAM?
NAIOP members team with students at Vanderbilt’s Owen School of Business to teach and work with them about the various aspects of the real estate industry.

PROGRAM CHAIR
Rick Helton (currently teaches at the Owen School of Business).

NAIOP MEMBERS’ PARTICIPATION
The Mentoring Program will be presented to each member, and members will be surveyed to determine desired level of participation.

PROGRAM LEVELS
The program is designed to take the form best suited for the participating member. Depending on needs and interest, members can sign up for one of three levels of participation:
  • Level I – Mentoring:This would involve each member meeting with the same graduate student on a regular basis (as little as once a month) to discuss, counsel, and expose the student to different aspects of real estate. The objective of the Mentoring Level is to expose a student to real estate and to be a ‘sounding board’ for questions about the industry.
  • Level II – Tasking:This level requires more member involvement and allows a student to work on a specific task or project and may receive class credits. A member would work with the student on a specific task such as market research, acquisition underwriting, or financial lease analysis. The student’s work product would be to the benefit of the NAIOP member.
  • Level III – Internship:This level requires the most membership involvement. A student would agree to work with a member at his or her office for a specific period of time (not for a specific task). Depending upon the level of work and time commitment, the internship may be a paid position. The NAIOP member must be willing to invest the time and his or her knowledge in the process of real estate for this level to be beneficial for both parties.

PROGRAM GOALS
  1. Strengthen the Nashville NAIOP chapter.
  2. Expose graduate students to NAIOP and the Nashville real estate community.
  3. Expose NAIOP members to young real estate talent.

PROGRAM FUTURE

As membership interest grows, other area schools such as Lipscomb University, MTSU, or Belmont University can be added in the future.
